The Importance of Lighting Design

Get the right lighting to showcase that perfect furniture arrangement and room layout. So, how do you achieve a good lighting design?
How Home Lighting Influences Your Interior Design
There are many ways you can utilize lighting to enhance the ambiance of a space, but if you’re new to this, keep reading to learn more. Let your lighting design truly shine.
1. Understand The Characteristics of Light Source
Each type of lighting has a characteristic that can lighten a room, but you must focus on three characteristics: temperature, beam angle, and lumens.
Temperature
The first one that you need to focus on is temperature. In the lighting industry, Kelvin (K) refers to the light source’s coolness or warmth. The Kelvin rating on a light bulb or light fixture indicates the shade of white that is given off by the light source. Light measured up to 3000K is called warm light, up to 4000k is called natural light, and beyond that is called cool light.
Different color temperatures are used depending on the function of the space. Warm light gives a cozy, calm, and intimate atmosphere, perfect for the bedroom and family room. The best natural light lamps are those that use daylight as the main source of illumination. Natural light creates a better indoor experience and is best for a working space.
Beam Angle
The beam angle of LED illuminants determines how large the light cone appears in a room. To highlight an object in a space, such as an art piece or a photo, it’s best to use a narrow-angle light. In contrast, a wide angle is usually used to light a wide area or room.
Lumens
Lumens measure how much light you are getting from a bulb. More lumens mean it's a brighter light; fewer lumens mean it's a dimmer light. Lumens are how much light is visible to human eyes from the light source.
2. Layer It
Good lighting design is all about layers. Layers can create contrast, accentuate an object or an element, and highlight features in your home.
Ambient Lighting
Ambient lighting is often the main lighting in your house and will allow you to see your room clearly and set a specific tone for the space. You can choose up to three main ambient lighting for a particular room, such as a ceiling light, a wall lamp, a hanging lamp, or a combination of them all.
Accent Lighting
Next, there is accent lighting, which aims to highlight a specific detail or object in a room. You can highlight a painting, photograph, art piece, or even a plant. Accent lighting can add a lot of visual interest to a space and make it feel more luxurious or sophisticated. In general, accent lighting should be delicate and not overpowering.
Task Lighting
Task lighting, as the name suggests, is the light used for a specific task, whether it’s a downlight in the kitchen, soft light behind the TV table to accompany your movie night, or a workbench. It illuminates the workspace, helping you see important details thus making life simpler.
3. Get Creative
Okay, now that you understand the basics of what kind of lighting options are out there, what will you try in your living spaces? This is where you can get creative in choosing your lighting design and don’t forget to try different combinations to make the lighting in your home unique. If you’re happy with your lighting selections, it’s already a win.
